Rugs Carpet Construction

RC&D produce rugs and carpets created with two weaving techniques, Hand Knotting & Hand tufting.

Hand Tufting
Hand tufting is by far the quickest method of producing a rug/carpet by hand and is commonly used for classic and contemporary styles including shag piles.

The hand tufting method uses a cotton backing cloth. The design is then traced and yarns are stitched onto it by a hand held tufting gun that places the yarn onto the backing cloth, to create various patterns and textures. Once the tufting is complete, latex is applied and a secondary backing is attached. Once the latex has dried, the carpet is placed on the finishing surface for shearing, carving and beveling to take place as required.

Hand Knotted
Hand knotted rugs are created with the highest grade Himalayan wool, silk, linen, hemp & natal. Weaving qualities are available in 60, 80, 100, 150 & 200 knots per square inch.

This ancient production technique involves weaving the yarns using warp & weft cotton threads by hand and knotting them one by one to the rug. A variety of finishes and textures can be achieved through loop pile, cut pile, special hand dying techniques and a chemical wash to enhance the unique appearance of the carpet. All yarns are hand carded and hand dyed according to designs & colours required. Once weaving is completed, hand shearing & carving is applied to complete the carpet.

Some notes on Nepal
Noted for its majestic Himalayas, which in Sanskrit means the abode of snow, Nepal is both mountainous and hilly. Nepal extends from the Himalayan range in the north to the Indo-Gangetic lowlands in south. Mt Everest, the highest point of the Himalayas is in Nepal. A landlocked country, it is surrounded by India on three sides & China’s Tibetan region, to the north. Nepal is almost totally dependent on India for transit facilities and access to the sea, to the Bay of Bengal.

The country is well endowed with perennial rivers, lakes and glacial lakes that originate in the Himalayas. The variety in Nepal’s topography provides home to wildlife like tigers, rhinos, monkeys, bears, yaks, leopards and different species of insects and birds. Due to the cold of winter, the open air & the various climate conditions of Nepal, Himalayan wool is very hardy.

All Rugs, Carpet & Design hand knotted rugs are manufactured in Nepal, using Himalayan wool.
